Speed Queen Tripping the Circuit Breaker

3rd November 2026

This Speed Queen commercial washing machine was tripping the circuit breaker at the switchboard. Inspection and a discussion with the user revealed that water had overflowed from the washing bowl, wetting the motor and control printed circuit board.

Removing the residual moisture allowed the machine to operate again without tripping the breaker. However, it remains uncertain whether the water exposure caused any lasting damage.

Finding the cause of the electrical fault

A washing machine tripping a circuit breaker can have several possible causes. The symptom alone does not identify which component is affected, so professional fault finding is important.

In this case, the overflow provided useful information about what had happened. Water had reached both the motor, which drives the washing action, and the electronic control board, which manages the machine’s operation.

Moisture on electrical components can create unintended paths for electrical current. This can cause a short circuit or another electrical fault that trips a protective device at the switchboard.

Removing moisture from the affected components

The motor and control board were dried to remove the residual moisture causing the electrical fault. Following this work, the washing machine became operational again without tripping the circuit breaker.

This was a confirmed improvement in operation, but it does not establish that the components escaped permanent damage. The long-term effect of the water exposure remains uncertain.

What to do if your washing machine trips the breaker

Stop using the machine and arrange a professional assessment, particularly if there has been a leak or overflow. Do not repeatedly reset the breaker or attempt to dry internal electrical components yourself.

This job shows why both inspection and information from the person using the appliance matter. Knowing about the overflow helped identify where to investigate, rather than assuming a failed part was responsible.
