Miele Induction Cooktop Tripping the Circuit Breaker in Armidale

A customer in Armidale had a Miele induction cooktop that was tripping the circuit breaker at the switchboard and displaying fault code FE 31.
Testing identified a short-circuited electronic component on the control board. A replacement board is required, but the repair has not yet been confirmed as completed.
Investigating the FE 31 fault code
The FE 31 code can point towards a control module fault. However, an error code alone is not enough to determine which component has failed or why the circuit breaker is tripping.
John tested the module and found that a triac, an electronic component used to switch electrical current, had short-circuited. In this case, the failed component was causing the circuit breaker to trip.
Possible overheating of the electronics
Overheating can contribute to electronic component failure. One possible contributing factor noted for this type of fault is cookware that does not sit flat on the cooking surface, either because its base is uneven or because it rests partly on the cooktop’s raised rim.
This does not confirm that cookware positioning caused the failure in this particular cooktop. The confirmed finding was the short-circuited triac on the control board.
Use cookware suitable for induction cooking, with a flat base, and position it correctly within the cooking area in accordance with the appliance instructions.
A replacement control board is required
A replacement board is required to address the identified fault. The cooktop will need to be tested following replacement before normal operation can be confirmed.
What to do if your cooktop trips the circuit breaker
Stop using the cooktop and arrange a professional assessment. Do not repeatedly reset the breaker or attempt to access the internal electronics yourself. Induction cooktops contain mains-powered components and require appropriate electrical testing.
