Haier Fridge Freezer Water Leak in Armidale

We recently attended a home in Armidale where a Haier refrigerator was leaking water from the bottom freezer compartment. Water leaks inside refrigerators are often related to the defrost system, and proper diagnosis is required to identify the exact cause.
In this case, the problem was traced to a blocked drain pipe within the freezer section.
How the Freezer Defrost System Works
Inside the freezer compartment is an evaporator that cools the freezer and also circulates cold air into the fresh food section of the refrigerator. During normal operation, ice gradually forms on the evaporator.
To prevent excessive ice buildup, the refrigerator periodically activates heater elements that melt this ice as part of an automatic defrost cycle.
The melted ice turns into water, which drains through a small pipe at the base of the freezer compartment. This water flows down to the compressor area underneath the fridge, where it evaporates safely.
Why Drain Pipes Sometimes Block
The drain pipe usually contains a small metal rod that is warmed during operation. This helps prevent the drain from freezing over and becoming blocked by ice.
If this system does not function properly, ice can form in the drain and prevent water from flowing away. When this happens, water can overflow inside the freezer compartment and eventually leak out of the appliance.
Manufacturing Foam Blocking the Drain
During inspection of this particular appliance, we discovered that a piece of foam from the manufacturing process had fallen into the drain pipe. This foam blocked the drain passage and prevented the defrost water from flowing away.
As the water built up, it spilled over inside the freezer compartment and froze, leading to the visible water leak from the bottom of the freezer.
Fridge Replacement Under Warranty
Unfortunately, this blockage could not be repaired effectively on site due to its location within the appliance structure. Because the refrigerator is still under warranty, the manufacturer has arranged for the unit to be replaced.
This situation highlights how internal blockages within modern refrigeration systems can sometimes originate from manufacturing debris rather than normal wear and tear.
